One of our Superstar Fundraisers, Rosie, has written us an amazing piece on what it’s like to be a volunteer with The Sheffield Cats Shelter, and to become our mascot, Travis!
“I am a (very) part-time fundraiser for The Sheffield Cats Shelter (TSCS), & a (very) full-time NHS worker!
I first became involved with TSCS as an adopter of cats. My current fur-baby is my second rescue from The Shelter. So I have long been aware of TSCS & the work that they do.
I am a self-confessed crazy cat lady… When I read a Facebook appeal for volunteers to help out with fundraising, with an emphasis upon dressing up as Travis, the SCS mascot, I thought my dreams had come true.
“I have always harboured a secret ambition to be a mascot, and a not-so-secret ambition to be a cat! Here I am, approaching fifty, and I have achieved both!
In the last year, I have managed to help out TSCS three times. Working weekends & all round the clock makes it very difficult for me to be available at key fundraising times. But this has never seemed to be a problem for The Shelter- I am on their books, & if I am free to help out with an event, I let them know, & I get involved.
“My biggest regret is that I cannot do it more- I absolutely love being Travis! By nature, I am quite shy & usually run from the camera, but being Travis is so much fun! It is totally different from my usual job & my usual persona, and it is all for a good cause! I have never been so photographed, I have probably never smiled so much, waved so much, or communicated with so many people! And nobody knows who is inside the suit, they just see the giant kitty cat!”
Having Travis attend events has been known to triple the money donated to us, because he attracts so much attention! Being willing to be Travis while fundraising for us is an incredible thing to do. You can even volunteer with a friend or family member and take it in turns!
