Adopting a Cat

Finding the Right Cat

All the cats and kittens in the shelter require loving, caring permanent homes. To find out about the current cats or kittens available for adoption, please visit the shelter any afternoon between 1:30 and 3:30 pm. Our wardens will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Before viewing the cats as a prospective adopter, you will be asked to fill out a short questionnaire - this allows the wardens to determine which of the cats would be most suited to you and your home environment.

For information on special cats that require a special home, please see the SOS cats page or telephone the shelter on 0114 272 4441 during opening hours.

The Adoption Process

Once you have decided upon a cat, the warden will take you through the adoption process. In order to save time, you should make sure that you have the following things available:

  • Proof of your ID and address (a utility bill, driving license or similar).
  • If you live in rented accommodation, a copy of your tenancy agreement and / or a signed letter from your landlord, on headed notepaper, that states that you are permitted to keep a cat in your premises*.
  • A suitable pet carrier to take your new feline friend(s) home in (we sell new and donated cat carriers).
  • A minimum adoption contribution of £65 is required for cats and kittens. This money goes towards our costs of vaccinations, spaying / neutering and microchipping (see below).Currently the shelter can only accept cash or cheques.
  • You should also prepare your home by making sure that you have a bed, food and a litter tray ready (we recommend that all cats are kept indoors for a minimum of 3 weeks before letting them out in order to get them acclimatised to their new home).

What does the Adoption Contribution Cover?

The Sheffield Cats Shelter does not make a profit by 'selling' cats. The adoption contribution of £65 goes part-way towards covering the costs of:

  • Vaccinations (Feline flu, enteritis and leukaemia)
  • Neutering
  • Microchipping
  • Food
  • Veterinary treatment (all cats are examined by our vet and recieve flea and worming treatment as a matter of course)

All of the above are things that a responsible cat owner would ordinarily pay for and, by adopting from the Shelter and making a contribution, you will actually be saving money as well as helping to give an animal a second chance.

Please see our SOS cats page for our most needing cats and have a look at the stories of the cats that have been adopted!
